- Unsteady operating conditions present additional challenges for the operation of small horizontal axis wind turbines including maximising energy capture from the wind. Computational models exist for each component of wind turbines, however many of these models have been derive from operating in steady conditions. This paper details the complete integration of models for blade aerodynamics, turbine yaw and drive train dynamics and compares predictions with measurements taken from an instrumented 5 kW horizontal axis wind turbine. Results show that the combined model captures the overall response of each component, however, model refinements of the yaw response and blade stall need to be incorporated to accurately capture the dynamic response of the whole turbine.
